Today we catch up with Katie Drury, an Accredited Practising Dietitian from Mid North Coast Physio, to find out more. Katie, what is a superfood? The term superfood is actually marketing genius used by food companies to describe common foods and their supposed health benefits. A quick Google of the word superfood and you’re overwhelmed with headings such as, The top 10 superfoods, The new superfoods for 2017 and The best superfoods for weight loss. While the foods touted as superfoods do generally have health benefits and contain various vitamins and minerals (like most real foods); the anti-ageing, anti-cancer and slimming properties etc are usually the product of smart marketing and media influence, and don’t actually hold much weight. This is not to say that you should cut them out altogether. By all means, if you enjoy an organic kale smoothie for breakfast and don’t mind the expense, continue enjoying it but just be aware that variety is important.
How do I know what is the right balance for me? If you would like more information on vitamins and minerals in food or feel that you struggle getting variety from your diet, the easiest way is to see an Accredited Dietitian. There is so much poorly researched information being spread by self-touted nutrition experts through social media these days that it is hard to know where to turn. The safest option is to see someone with a 4 year university degree, strong scientific evidence and accreditation through the Dietitians Association of Australia. I am available in both Moonee and Toormina clubs to make it easy for you to access the help you need.
Thanks Katie. Mid North Coast Physio are offering 5 FREE assessments with Katie to help you reach your health goals and discover a happier, healthier version of you. Call 1300273747 NOW to secure your FREE assessment before they are gone. Isn’t it time you started feeling great again?
If you’re struggling with your motivation, or you simply want to squeeze more out of every workout you do, then one of the smartest moves you can make is to get a workout buddy. In fact, having the right workout buddy can often be the difference between failure and success. The right workout partner can force you to tap into those extra reserves of strength and energy so that you push through a few extra reps. The right workout buddy helps you give it your all and if you want great results then you’ve got to give it everything you’ve got: you get out, what you put in.
So see one of your friendly reception team and ask for a VIP pass to bring along a buddy. If your buddy joins Coffs coast Health Club, as a thank you, we will give you 2 weeks free.
If you cant find a workout buddy, don’t worry.. just talk to one of our personal trainers here or come and join one of our classes here. With 10 different personal trainers and 65 classes running each week we have you covered #strongertogether
Some other benefits of Having a Workout Buddy;
1. Help you achieve your fitness goals.
2. Working out becomes fun.
3. Easier to try new workouts.
4. Keeps your form on point.
5. Competition makes you perform better.
6. Motivates and supports you.
7. Makes your workouts safer.
8. Brings variety to your workouts.
9. Increases commitment massively.
Currently, the community of Wadeye has an outbreak of melioidosis – a nasty bacterial infection spread through the ground. To help reduce the spread and allow the community to be more active, especially the kids, Alex can now provide the community with your kind donations.Giving feels good doesn’t it…
Here are 5 reasons why Autumn is a great time to start your health and fitness journey:
1. The key to forming any kind of long lasting fitness habit is to create a solid routine. Summer is filled with sporadic social events and fun excuses not to exercise. With all of that over it is easier to create a routine and schedule that you will be more likely to stick to. Be realistic, pick class types and times that suit your work and family commitments and then lock them in to your diary.
2. School routines, school activities, extra studies and work schedules are all well and truly organised by this time of year which means that it is easier to start to prioritise your exercise and health over the chaos of work and family life.
3. By creating a long lasting routine now you will set yourself up for success over the winter months when the temptation to hibernate it strong. By committing now and making your group exercise classes a non-negotiable part of your week you will be more inclined to continue to exercise as the weather becomes cooler.
4. Prepare your body and your mind for the next long hot summer. By becoming the fittest and healthiest version of yourself over the Autumn and Winter months you will be better prepared both physically and mentally for the next festive and party season.
5. The cooler months of Autumn provide the perfect temperature in our tropical climate for working out. Not too hot and humid and definitely not too cold – there are simply NO excuses anymore!
1. Do I really need it now?
2. Can I live without it for the time being?
3. How will I feel after eating it?
4. Will eating it be the ‘start of the end’ for my motivation and confidence?
The answers to these questions may be sufficient to put the brakes on making an impulsive choice that you may regret. If you do choose to give in to temptation – and remember, it really is your choice to make – consider the following:
• A hot cross bun has around 230 calories, and 8 teaspoons of sugar will be absorbed into your blood stream. It will take about 40 minutes of extra exercise to burn off.
• A Bakers Delight choc chip Easter bun has around 265 calories and yields 8 teaspoons of sugar, so you’ll need 44 minutes of exercise in addition to what you would already be doing.
• Four mini solid eggs have 144 calories and 3 teaspoons of sugar, so you’ll need an extra 24 minutes of exercise.
• A Lindt milk chocolate bunny has 523 calories and 11 teaspoons of sugar, and will take around 1 1/2 hours of extra exercise to burn off.
Why not make your own healthy, GUILT FREE ‘Hot Cross Bun’ with this interesting recipe. We have the muffin mix at reception in both clubs or just ask the Healthy Inspirations ladies in pink for your packet today.
