Is Your Headache Coming From Your Neck?
You might be surprised to learn that an estimated 15-20% of headaches actually come from the neck, and not from the head.  Leading Physiotherapist Aaron Hardaker shares some information you need to know about getting some relief from these types of headaches.

A neck headache (formally called a cervicogenic headache) results when your nerve system gets a bit confused.  The upper 3 cervical spinal nerves share the same pathway to the brain as the nerve that carries messages from your face to your brain.  So sometimes the pain in your neck is misunderstood and the brain “feels” as though the pain is coming from the head.

How Do You Treat Neck Headache?
The really good news about neck headache is that relief is often immediate, once diagnosed and treated. The precise treatment will depend upon the source of the problem.  Stiff neck joints may need to be loosened using a gentle joint mobilisation techniques.  Hypermobile (or unstable) joints may require deep neck muscle strengthening exercises to stabilise and limit joint movement.  Stretching, massage or acupuncture may be used to relax tight or over active muscles and weak muscles may require specific strengthening exercises.

Your physiotherapist will work with you to determine a program of stretches, massage, joint mobilisation and exercise that will alleviate the problem with your neck… and ultimately will relieve the pain in your head.

Support The Coffs Coast Charity Walk!

The Coffs Coast Charity Walk starts at Moonee Park Reserve in Coffs Harbour and follows the Solitary Islands Walk through to Lower Park Beach Reserve – 14km on Sunday 18th June. A 21km half marathon distance is also offered of which extended to the bottom of Mutton Bird Island and back to Lower Park Beach Reserve.

The walks are an all-terrain challenge across sand, bush track and roads and should not be underestimated by any walker. The spectacular scenery creates an awe-inspiring backdrop for the Charity Walk. Participants can walk or run at any pace however it is a non-competitive social event.

Walk as an individual or as part of a team, either way you will be fully supported all the way by Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Crew, Event Staff and Volunteers.
Participants can enter Individually or in teams of 2-20 people. Minimum age is 12 years old (accompanied by a paying adult)

Happy 10th Birthday to Mid North Coast Physio!
From very humble beginnings, Mid North Coast Physiotherapy has grown to be one of the leading healthcare providers in the region.  We caught up with director Aaron Hardaker to hear about how they’ve made it 10 years and what’s in store to celebrate.

How did Mid North Coast Physio start out?
We started in a small rented room in Woolgoolga but quickly grew with the support of new clients and referrals from local doctors, leading to a new location and expanded days and hours.  From there, we expanded to Urunga to meet a similar need, before adding two more clinics in recent years in collaboration with Coffs Coast Health Club at Toormina and Moonee Beach.  We changed names from Northern Beaches Physio and Urunga Physio a couple of years ago to be more reflective of the reach of the businesses across the region, Mid North Coast Physio seemed to be much more appropriate.

Why do you see the 10th birthday as an important milestone?
More than anything, I think it shows we’re doing good things with helping clients achieve their goals.  If we weren’t, we certainly wouldn’t have lasted this long, let alone grown significantly over this period.  I’m really proud of the fact we’ve been able to help over 6000 people so far achieve better health, improved quality of life, less pain and more happiness – that’s why we turn up every day!

How can we join in the birthday celebrations?
We’ve decided to do things a little different to celebrate this birthday.  Instead of receiving gifts or having a big party, we’re going to giving some gifts.  Because we love what we do, we want you to come in and experience it firsthand. 2017 Coffs Coast Spartan Race – Burpees For A Cause!

At 8am on Sunday 21st May
, dedicated Spartans will gather at Jetty Beach, Coffs Harbour on the sand under the Jetty to raise funds for the White Ribbon Foundation and The Unite Project. These charities support victims of domestic violence and youth homelessness. There will be a few yawns as they limber up, shake off the sleep and get themselves psyched to smash 1km of Burpees for a Cause.Racers and their friends will be completing the 1km of burpees either as individuals or in teams of 3. An exclusive Spartan 1km Burpees badge is awarded at the finish line to all registered participants #gottaearnit

Why Burpees? They symbolise that no matter how many times a person is knocked down, there is always something within them that finds the strength and courage to stand back up. This is a small way we can let those affected by domestic violence and youth homelessness that they don’t stand alone.

Exploding The Myths About Diets and Nutrition – HELP IS HERE!
For many of us, between what you hear on television and the nutrition “advice” flooding social media, deciding what is healthy can be really confusing.  The best way to filter fact from fiction is to hear it from an expert in the field.  Who better to do that than our very own Katie Drury, an Accredited Practising Dietitian.

New ZUMBA Class at Moonee!
The Autumn timetable sees the introduction of a new ZUMBA class at 6.30pm on a Monday night at Coffs Coast Health Club Moonee.  Zumba is a fun, dynamic and effective dance fitness class where you can move your body to a fusion of Latin and international music. Zumba is all about having fun and shaking your booty and no dance experience is required.

Zumba is also on our timetable at MOONEE on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and at TOORMINA on Tuesdays at 6.30pm and Thursdays at 5.30pm. Why not bring your friends and join the party?

The Beautiful Beetroot Salad!
Fresh beetroot is so different to canned that it’s like a different vegetable. Here it’s combined with feta, onion and salad greens for a salad that packs a punch.  Serves 4

Ingredients
1 bunch baby beetroot, washed and trimmed
1/4 cup sugar-free balsamic dressing
2 cups mixed salad greens
1 small red onion sliced into wedges
180g feta

Method
1. Wrap beetroot in foil then bake in hot oven 200 C for 1 hour or until tender. Cool. Peel off skin then cut into quarters.
2. Place in a salad bowl then pour over dressing add greens then toss.
3. Crumble fetta over salad and season with freshly ground pepper.

These classes go for 55 minutes and are on at Toormina at 8am Monday through to Friday and at Moonee at 10.30am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We have three different types of 50+ classes –  50+FIT –  a strength, fitness and flexibility class. 50+CIRCUIT – a gentle strength, fitness and flexibility class that incorporates balance and coordination exercises. 50+FLEX – a specialised class which targets increased flexibility, as well as abdominal and lower back strength. REVEALED: Top Tips to Avoid The Christmas Bulge!
On average, Australians gain 0.8 – 1.5kg over Christmas time; and it’s not often easy to shift the excess weight once the New Year rolls around. So, what can you do to beat the Christmas bulge? Mid North Coast Physio’s Accredited Dietitian Katie Drury reveals her tips to eat healthy while still enjoying the Christmas festivities.What are some strategies that can be used to make Christmas eating healthier?
1. Don’t skip breakfast: Instead, opt for a filling and healthy breakfast to start the day off on the right food, and avoid over-eating when it gets to lunch and dinner time. For example, eggs on wholegrain toast, a wholegrain cereal, such as Weetbix with low-fat milk or fruit and yoghurt.
2. Stick to healthy plate portions: aim to have half your plate filled with non-starchy vegetables or salad vegetables (i.e. everything but potato, sweet potato and corn).
3. Avoid Boxing Day over-eating by freezing leftovers on Christmas Day in individual portions that can be defrosted when required.
4. Take time to appreciate the foods you are eating; put your fork down between bites and take notice of the flavour and texture of foods when you are eating.
5. Drinking alcohol can add to the merriment of the festive season, but you don’t need to drink in excess to be the life of the party. Aim to have at least two alcohol free days per week, and try not to have more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day.
6. Keep up your exercise over the holidays! Ask for a gym membership for Christmas and get outside on Christmas Day with the family for a game of backyard cricket or touch football between courses.

You Ask and We Deliver!

We love hearing your feedback, listening to your fabulous ideas and getting your requests.  In answer to many of your requests Santa has come early at Coffs Coast Health Club! 

You will be excited to know that we have just installed a massive air conditioning unit in the group exercise studio at Moonee.  The room is a bit smaller & doesn’t have the natural airflow of Toormina’s main studio, so this has been the number one request from Moonee since last Summer.  The feedback so far has been very positive, so it might be time for you to head on in and see what all the fuss is about.

In the last two weeks we have also purchased new kettlebells, slam balls, aerobic steps, tricep ropes, an olympic swiss bar and resistance bands. We have also ordered a couple of free wheel bikes as an extra warm up or circuit class option for both clubs.

A common request from our 50+ classes has been a circuit timer with variable timings and a large display, so we have just received one each for the Main Studio at Toormina and one is in the Studio at Moonee. Enjoy!

Are you looking for a quiet time to workout or do you like being around the buzz of a busy gym? Either way, here’s a bit of insight in to your member usage patterns at both Moonee & Toormina clubs. There are some similarities but there are also some slight differences that will allow you to plan your workouts more effectively. You will notice that many of the highest attendance periods are around our group exercise classes as they tend to bring many members in to each club at once because of the scheduled start times.

Moonee Club
~ The most popular 2 hour workout periods are 4-6pm, followed by 9-11am & then 5-7am.
~ The most popular day to workout is Tuesday with over 200 visits, very closely followed by Wednesday, Monday, Thursday & then smaller numbers for Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
~ Friday tends to have about 2/3 of the visits of Thursday, with Saturday a little over 1/2 & Sunday a little less than 1/2 the visits of Thursday.
~ The 2 most popular group exercise classes in the club are generally Emma’s 6.30pm Zumba Class on Wednesday & Shell’s 9.30am Pump Class on Tuesday.

Tips To Stay Warm In Class This Winter Workout Season

polar bearAs the weather gets cooler we can be tempted to sleep through our alarm in the morning and stay under the doona, or head straight home after a long cold day at work but it is important for your health and well-being that you continue exercising right through the Winter months. In order to boost your immune system, maintain your fitness and keep your mind happy and active, regular exercise is essential.

1. It is warmer inside the gym than it is outside and your favourite class is going to get you hot and sweaty but make sure that you wear layers to and from the club so that your muscles stay warm.  Remove the layers as you warm up during class and then add them back on as you cool off.
2. Hydration is very important and although you may not feel as thirsty when it is cold you need to ensure that you drink before, during and after class.
3. Allow a little extra time before class to warm up on a piece of cardio equipment or by doing some dynamic stretching.  Warming the muscles up adequately will prevent injury.
4. Put your favourite classes in your diary at the start of the week and commit to those work outs like you would any other appointment.
5. If you are finding that you are hitting the snooze button too often why not try leaving your alarm on the other side of the bedroom. Once you are up to switch it off you are up for the day.
6. If you are attending an early morning class lay your workout gear out ready for you to slip in to straight away or even sleep in your gear. If you are heading to the gym after work make sure you have everything in your car ready to go so there is no temptation to head home for any reason before heading to your class.

The great thing about group exercise is that you get to sweat it out with other people who are motivated, inspired and pushed by your instructor.  So don’t hibernate this winter – get in to the club and get warm while you get fitter, stronger and healthier.

Coffs Harbour Running Festival Training Program

Are you getting ready for the Coffs Harbour 10km Fun Run? Glen Barnett is running a training program for Beginners to participate in the 10km fun run.

The 9 week program provides all the coaching and support you need to compete in the Coffs Harbour 10km on 4 September 2016! Starting on the 6th July this program will give you what you need to make the distance.

The mid-week session on the track will focus on:
– General fitness
– Breathing technique
– Core strength
– Injury prevention

On Saturdays we do a ‘long run’, and the distances increase as the program progresses. At this distance session we will focus on:
– Pacing and race strategy
– Distance “in your legs”
– Mental focus
– Running form
– Building up endurance

On top of the group sessions there will be a specific day by day training guide which outlines what you should be doing every day to help you be your very best on race day. Coffs Coast Academy of Sport – High Performance Program for 9-12yr olds!


Far too many talented sports people both young & old miss out on achieving their goals due to a lack of resources & finances but Coffs Coast Health Club (CCHC) & Mid North Coast Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic (MNCPSIC) have joined forces to address these problems via the Coffs Coast Academy of Sport.

Both businesses provide heavily subsidised health club memberships, physiotherapy, massage therapy, strength & conditioning training, personal training, team training, exercise physiology, sports science, nutritional advice, weight loss programs, supplements, merchandise & group exercise classes to assist our local heroes to be the best that they can be.

Starting today Wednesday 1st June at 4.15pm on Fitzroy Oval (next to the Coffs Memorial Pool), Josh Ward who is one of the Academy’s Exercise Scientists will be running a weekly High Performance Program (HPP) for 9-12year olds. The idea of this program is to develop speed, strength & endurance in a safe environment, so anyone attending needs to be at least an intermediate level of general fitness. As it is a subsidised program powered by CCHC & MNCPSIC the cost will only be $50 per person for the 5 weekly sessions before the June school holidays.

The HPP has limited places available due to the nature of the training & bookings will be taken on a first in, first served basis.

Our 2016 Fitness Buddy Challenge is scheduled for Saturday 7th May. Grab your buddy and register at reception asap to secure your team. Your training can start today or you can wait for the official 8 week lead up starting on the 14th March for the challenge exercises below. Great prizes up for grabs and rewards along the way. Link up with your favourite Personal Trainer for some discounted small group personal training to get you Buddy Challenge ready!

Buddys can be any age, any sex and any fitness level. Friends, family, colleagues or even complete strangers. The winners of the event will be based

on Total Accumulated Buddy Points from the following exercises:

  • Most Toe Push-ups in 1 minute
  • Longest Wall Squat Held
  • Most Sit-ups (elbows to knees, unassisted) in 1 minute
  • 2km run time

Tell us a bit about your background Daniel?

I graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science degree. After growing up on a sugar cane farm near Yamba, I moved to Brisbane to continue my study before moving back to the coast. I’m passionate about helping people be the healthiest and happiest they can be, and I’m certain that exercise is one of the single best things to achieve this.

Who should see you?

I specialise in using exercise as treatment for many chronic health conditions as well as for those recovering from injury or living with a disability. I work individually with my clients or within a team of other allied health care professionals like I do at Coffs Coast Health Club between physiotherapy, massage therapy, weight loss coaching and personal training to prescribe exercise programs and lifestyle modification strategies which are backed up by scientific research. Put simply, just about anyone who needs support with exercise. Some of the common reasons clients see me are for rehabilitation, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and lower back pain. It’s important to remember that exercise can be as fun as you make it and can bring about improved quality of life, pain management, improved immune system, greater self-confidence, improved body image and weight loss, increased independence in the home, facilitate social and community involvement, reduced risk of fracture through building bone density and reducing risk of falls. The list goes on and on…

Easter Break Opening Hours!

Again this year, we will be OPEN from 7am-12noon on Easter Saturday 26th March with all regular classes, as well as childminding between 7.15am-10.45am in Toormina or 7.15am-9.45am in Moonee.

The clubs will be unsupervised on Easter Friday 25th March, Easter Sunday 27th March and Easter Monday 28th March but will remain open with normal hours, classes & childminding before & after those days.

All 24/7 members will be able to access the club at anytime to workout during unsupervised times, so take advantage of that option and upgrade your membership for only $2 per week at reception if you haven’t already…
